I’m Jescie Hall, author of A Sliver of Infinite, PLAYERS, and PLEASERS. Currently, I’m a Veterinary Technician and mom by day, and an author by night. I have a passion for science, astrophysics, and psychology, as well as a passion to express myself creatively. Writing for me has not only been an amazing release for all of my many creative desires, but also a gateway towards meeting new amazing friends and some of the kindest-hearted readers. I enjoy expressing myself through writing, painting, drawing, dance, and any other form of creating. You will most often find me with a glass of either coffee or wine, depending on the time of day, with a good book in hand. Reading has brought me here, and writing is the force that will take me to where I want to go. Thank you all for your amazing support!
When did you realize you wanted to be a writer?
I never felt like there was a point in time when I decided I wanted to be a writer. Writing for me was a creative release I had grown to love. I never told myself I needed to do this or be that, I just found an exciting way to spread the creative energy that had been building up within me. I’m beyond glad I found my niche.
When did you write your first book and how old were you?
I wrote a few horrifying books when I was younger about Zombies and such, but it wasn’t until last October that I had actually written and typed up my very first novel.
How long does it take to write?
Writing comes whenever I have the time. As a mother, some days you are given more freedom than others, so I usually try to write something at least once a day. Late at night or early mornings are generally when the time is right.
What do you like to do when you’re not writing?
When I’m not writing, I enjoy doing anything outdoors. I love going on hikes and visiting our family lake lot. Other days, I love to cuddle up with a good book or watch movies or a good Netflix series. I also enjoy working out, weight lifting mostly, or listening to music that inspires me.
What was one of the most surprising you learned in creating your book?
One of the most surprising things I learned while creating my first book was how emotionally attached I could become to a fictional character I had created. I had no idea I’d be bawling my eyes out while typing words that I came up with. It was as if I created a new existence for these characters that would stay with me forever.
What do you think makes a good story?
I think a good story has an interesting plot twist. Something unexpected that tugs at your heartstrings. I love a book that leaves me sitting there afterward, thinking about it often. There’s nothing like having the ability to reach into someone’s soul and make them feel things through your words and your imagination.
As a child, what did you want to do when you grew up?
As a child, I wanted to be a Veterinarian. I also had a passion for science, animals, and behavior, and still do!
What quote inspired you and your life by?
There are so many amazing quotes that I love and live by, but one that has always stuck with me is a quote by Stephen Hawking. “Life would be tragic if it weren’t funny.” I am a firm believer in making light of dark situations, only for the fact that positivity changes people. If we didn’t have the ability to laugh at ourselves daily, we would indeed live a tragic and sad existence. Life gets heavy and hard, but finding moments or people that bring you up is essential in fulfilling your best life. There’s nothing better for the soul than a good laugh.
What Movie or series character would you say describe you as a person?
This is a difficult question, but the first thing that comes to mind is Annie from Bridesmaids. I’m a hot mess most days, I mess things up, and make mistakes often, I’m far from perfect, as she was, yet I’m very loyal to my friends and family. I’m also a jokester and very sarcastic, making light of most situations, and acting totally ridiculous for some laughs. At the end of the film, all the pieces finally come together for her. She finds her passion, all while still being her imperfectly perfect self. I hope for the same!
What song inspires you?
A song that inspires me is Elastic Heart by Sia. The lyrics are moving in that they embody pain with the strength to conquer. Also, her voice is simply amazing.
When you wrote your first book. What inspired the story?
When I wrote A Sliver of Infinite, I had been reading a lot but had yet to read a book that really included love, psychological mystery, and tragedy. I wanted to write a book that I had always wanted to read. It stemmed from my love of science, mental health, and of course, love.
What inspired your characters in your first book and were they based on people in your life?
The characters weren’t really inspired by anything other than the idea I wanted to push forward. I wanted a Dane in real life, and I feel like I’ve been like Kodi in my own life. However, they are not directly inspired by anyone in particular.
Would you change anything from your first book?
I wouldn’t. I thought about changing my story so that the ending would be rainbows and butterflies and make people happy. However, I told myself from the beginning of the book, I would keep it real, raw, and beautiful, just as real-life often is.
If there is a message in any of your books, what would you like people to take away from reading your book?
The takeaway from A Sliver of Infinite is this: Live your life to the fullest, love who you want, and search for depth in this world. We are only given such a short amount of time in this life we live, mine as well make something special out of it by seeking your own truth.
Why is reading a book better than watching a movie?
Reading a book can be better than watching a movie because each of us is unique in that we conjure up our own little creative worlds of imagination. No two people can visualize a story the same way in our head, and I believe most times, that’s better. We make it our own.
If they make a movie of your book who would you like to play your main character.
If they were to make a movie about my book, A Sliver of Infinite, I would say a great actor to play Dane could be Hero Fiennes Tiffin. He has a very mysterious and untraditional, raw, piercing look about him. I would want the character of Dane to be played by someone who embodies that, untraditional sexiness. Bill Skarsgard or Dane Dehaan would be runners-up.
Do you like to read ebooks or paperback?
I enjoy reading ebooks, especially, late at night, in bed, on my phone. However, there is nothing like having that actual book in your hand. It feels more real to me, so I’d have to choose that.
Who is your favorite author?
Asking who my favorite author is, is like asking me which color of the rainbow is more beautiful. It’s an impossible question, but some of my favorites are, Jane Austin, Harper Lee, John Green, Emily Giffin, and Colleen Hoover, to name a few.
Tell the people about your book and what it is about.
My book, A Sliver of Infinite, is about a young girl, Dakota Silver, who has it all going for her. Born into a successful family, she’s worked hard to achieve her academic success. She’s been privileged to have it all, the looks, the preppy jock boyfriend, the drive to keep up with her parent’s expectations of her, yet she seems to yearn for more. Dane Dillon is the silent, moody, tall, dark, and handsome neighbor with an edge. Incredibly smart for his age, his broken family has left him to achieve success in his own way. Forming an unlikely desire for each other that they both try to fight, they continuously find themselves being drawn towards one another. However, he’s hiding a side of himself that not even he can control. Will love prove more powerful than the secrets that are kept? Or will the deep, disturbing skeleton hiding in the closet destroy everything. A Sliver of Infinite is a book that will pull at your heartstrings. It’s a real look at just how painful, raw, and yet beautiful life and love can be.
